APBF Strategic Planning; Call for VOLUNTEERS

On May 5, 2012, the staff and volunteers of Alalay sa Pamilya at Bayan Foundation (APBF) came together in Ortigas Center to revisit the Vision/Mission statement of the Foundation.  Workshops were likewise held to encourage the current volunteers to take more seriously their task as volunteer values educators, and to launch a campaign for more volunteers.

The primary objectives of APBF, which was formally created in June 2010, are: to empower the public schools and enrich the learning therein so that the quality of life of the pupils, teachers, and their families may be raised, through the delivery of values education modules.  It is hoped that, through this formation in values and virtues, the pupils and teachers may undergo an attitude change, enabled through a greater love for God, a more productive and responsible way of life, and a greater self-confidence which in turn will make them selfless servants of the Filipino people.

In APBF, emphasis is laid on character education, especially on those human virtues that will make of the pupils more reliable citizens of the nation, such as: obedience to authority, industriousness, respect for neighbor, service-orientedness, and the like. The volunteers delivering these modules have likewise augmented the academic learning in the public schools through academic tutorials, mentoring, and the teaching of Catechism.  Mentoring holds extraordinary promise, as this personal follow-up ensures training and guidance that is appropriate and suited to the circumstances of each one.

Apart from the pupils and teachers benefiting from the education imparted in the public schools, the volunteers above all have been the primary beneficiaries of the activities of APBF.  Volunteering, as we are told during the International Volunteer Day last December 5, is a concrete chance for volunteers to work together on projects and campaigns promoting their contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels.  The volunteers of APBF are no exception: they have exceptionally been hardworking and giving of themselves by undergoing the necessary training in values education from the trainors of APBF and relentlessly dedicating time and energy to go to the beneficiary public schools and teach values, Catechism and academic classes to the pupils.

In recent months, the organizers of APBF have realized that it is critically important to augment and improve the teaching skills of the school teachers themselves.  Thus, last October, a series of Teachers’ Training seminars was held at the APBF facility in Tanay, Rizal.  Close to 200 teachers of Ramon Magsaysay High School were some of the participants in said seminar. The training series will continue via quarterly modules to be delivered in the school premises or out-of-town starting in January 2012.

Annabelle Brown Centennial Professorial Chair Lecture
by Dr. Aliza Racelis, UP College of Business Administration,
May 4, 2012

Last 4 May 2012, Dr. Aliza Racelis, holder of the Annabelle Brown Centennial Professorial Chair, presented her paper entitled "Ethics and Governance Issues in Sustainability in Asia: Literature Review and Research Proposals" at the College of Business Administration, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Q.C.

In her paper, Dr. Racelis sought to present the ethical and governance aspects found in sustainable development efforts in Asia, with special focus on the Philippines where literature permitted.  Sustainability, defined as encompassing ecosystem health, human needs, economic development, social justice, common good, and human dignity, involves a number of ethical and governance issues, which the research paper groups into five: (1) Corporate and state governance, and the rule of law; (2) Ethics and morality, (3) Genuine poverty alleviation, (4) Collaborative efforts, and (5) Training and education.  The paper ends with specific research proposals in these 5 aspects.

Alalay Christmas party 2011 and Book Launch

Alalay sa Pamilya at Bayan Christmas party 2011 and Book Launch

On 10 December 2011 (Saturday), Alalay sa Pamilya at Bayan Foundation (APBF) came together in the various beneficiary schools —viz.:
Nueve de Febrero Elementary School, Pleasant Hills Elementary School and Eulogio Rodriguez
Integrated School— to have Holy Mass celebrated and Confessions held, for the benefit of the
students and teachers who have been working together in the past several months to augment the
education delivered in those schools.

In APBF, emphasis is laid on character education, especially on those human virtues
that will make of the pupils more reliable citizens of the nation, such as: obedience to authority,
industriousness, respect for neighbor, service-orientedness, and the like. The volunteers delivering
these modules have likewise augmented the academic learning in the public schools through

Question 2: Maraming Salamat po.

Question 4: Pag-usapan natin ang volunteering at volunteer work.

Humanae Vitae - Salient Points - in Tagalog

Humanae Vitae - Salient Points - in Tagalog

As a result of the Volunteers' Training Seminar last March 5, I decided to prepare a powerpoint presentation of Humanae Vitae in Filipino, so as to assist our volunteers in explaining important truths about Family, Marriage, Life and Love. I've embedded here the slideshare.net presentation:

Jason Evert in the Philippines

Jason Evert in the Philippines

This year’s Real Love Revolution campaign commenced Thursday with the first event of the series of talks featuring American speaker Jason Evert.

The event held at the University of the Philippines Theater and organized by the UA&P Student Executive Board and UP Klub Tala also included a talk show and variety show where today’s young personalities shared their take on the meaning of love, sexuality and relationships.

Above: A photo of some youths from Ramon Magsaysay High School, with Jason Evert at the U.P. Theatres, Feb. 24, 2011.

Here's an early video footage of one of the many interesting points made by Jason Evert at the U.P.Theatre:

Jason Evert encouraged us to read their new book
"HOW TO FIND YOUR SOULMATE...
[without losing your soul]"

Here are some youths' comments after attending the Jason Evert talk at SMX Mall of Asia, Feb. 27, 2011:

"Hi Mr. Evert. I listened to your talk this afternoon in SMX. You are a gift of heaven to us. We have a filipino expression for this: "hulog ka ng langit" (literally "you drop from heaven"). I am now a fan. Will keep you and and your family in mind. Many thanks. By the way, I hope this will not be the last time. More young Filipinos should hear you and learn from you (including the less young)."

"Mr. Evert, I went to the conference at SMX hours ago, and I thank God for channeling His knowledge through you. I've really learned a lot of things about dating, sex, not to mention the moral state that American teens are having now. I love the stories and jokes you spoke on stage. You and your wife are blessings. Have a safe trip home and God bless you. :)"
